Peri-menopausal/Menopausal Skin

As women approach their late 40’s and 50’s there is generally a noticeable change in the way their skin functions and appears, this is due to a dramatic change in hormone production. Over time UV exposure has a compounding effect on the production of elastin amongst other skin elements such as collagen and hyaluronic acid which provide you with a youthful skin appearance. You will also notice that the skin can become less plump due to the decrease of hyaluronic acid production and an increase in the degeneration of this crucial stability component of the skin. When experiencing hot flushes you may also notice an increase in vascularity in the skin which is also exacerbated by the reduction in collagen and hyaluronic acid.

Skin conditions that may worsen or become noticeable during this time are eczema, rosacea, acne rosace, another vascular condition known as poikiloderma which is an elastin deficiency and pigmentation. When treating a woman experiencing perimenopause/menopausal symptoms, we will immediately start focusing on increasing all the structural elements of the skin.
